Bass Talharpa (Tagelharpa, Jouhikko) – Bowed Lyre, a Musical Instrument Dating Back to the Early Middle Ages
The Bass Talharpa, also known as Tagelharpa or Jouhikko, is a bowed lyre, a musical instrument with roots in the early medieval period. It was widely used in Scandinavian countries and is known to have been played during the Viking Age, when skalds sang their sagas along the shores of ancient fjords.
The body of this instrument is crafted from solid ash wood, featuring a rounded shape for optimal sound resonance. Historical research suggests that the instrument's body was not flat but hollowed out from solid wood. Ash wood is renowned for its striking texture and beautiful grain patterns.
The soundboard is made of resonant spruce, ensuring volume and superior acoustics. The Talharpa is treated with premium oil-wax to protect it from moisture and maintain its appearance for years to come.
The Bass Talharpa produces a loud, deep, and enveloping sound, embodying the magic of the North and the power of ancient sagas. To achieve this rich sound, we use metal cello strings. The instrument is tuned in a quart-quint system, most commonly starting from the note A (A1-E2-A2), where A2 is the leading vocal string. Variations in other notes are possible, depending on string tension. Excessive tension is determined visually and by assessing the string's elasticity. The quart tuning for bow play can only be achieved on 2 out of 3 notes, for example, A1-D2-G2.
Each instrument is handmade and takes approximately 2 weeks to craft. Slight variations may occur from one model to another.
