The bass talharpa (also known as tagelharpa or jouhikko) is a bowed lyre, a musical instrument dating back to the early Middle Ages. Widely used in Scandinavia, it was popular during the Viking era, when skalds recited their sagas along the shores of ancient fjords.
Crafted from solid ash, the body of the talharpa features a rounded shape designed to enhance sound resonance. Research indicates that traditional instruments were not flat but instead carved from a single piece of wood. Ash itself is an exceptionally textured and beautiful timber, boasting a distinct grain pattern.
The soundboard is crafted from resonant spruce, ensuring volume and superior acoustic performance. The talharpa is treated with premium segment oil wax, protecting it from moisture while preserving its aesthetic appeal for years to come.
With its deep, rich tone, the bas-talharpa evokes the mystique of the North and the power of ancient sagas. Metal cello strings are installed to achieve this unique sound. The instrument typically employs a quart-fifth tuning system, commonly starting from the note A (e.g., A1-E2-A2), with A2 serving as the lead vocal string. Tuning variations depend on string tension, which is assessed both visually and through tactile feedback. Playing with a bow is best suited for two of the three strings, such as A1-D2-G2.
Talharpa is handmade over approximately two weeks, allowing for slight variations between models. Included in the set is a horsehair bow. As a gift, you'll receive a protective case featuring a handle made from water-resistant fabric.
