Yaruga — is more than just a musical group. The project was born in 2016 from the idea of creating an authentic folk ensemble that would convey the mood, meanings, and mystical spirit of our ancestors’ way of life. The founder of the workshop, Denis, started by studying ethnography and archaeology to recreate the sound of ancient eras.
  • About YARuGA
YARuGA — This is ritual dark folk from Tula. Shamanism in music and sound, hypnotic rhythms, the magic of polyphony, and mind-enveloping low-frequency chanting.
YARuGA will be your guide into the world of northern paganism, Vikings, their myths, and rituals.
  • Concept and Idea
On stage, YARuGA is a visual projection of an ancient cult, where shamans and priests perform their worship through song and music. Dark, black, yet vivid imagery aims to immerse the audience as deeply as possible into a pantheistic trance, creating a timeless connection with long-past centuries and evoking a sense of unity with the entire world.
The idea of YARuGA is the syncretism of ancient, even primordial, beliefs of Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, and Turkic peoples. In the band's logo, one can discern elements of Scythian visual art, Scandinavian carved ornamentation, and Slavic proto-images of the world tree.
About music
You can't play this kind of music in a tavern, you can't dance to it in a drunken frenzy. It takes over your mind completely, penetrates the most hidden corners of your soul, brings up from the depths everything you've carefully concealed or ignored.
The main goal of YARuGA's music is to convey the "feeling" of a pantheistic worldview. The band approaches Slavic and Scandinavian mythologies indirectly, using them only as auxiliary tools.
Performance Features
At their concerts, the band leads the audience into conscious meditation. Each song of YARuGA is a unique tale of legends and lore, life and death, and the clash of elements. It is a musical saga that makes the audience's pulse beat to the rhythm of shamanic drums.
The audience enters a trance to the beat of drums, the sounds of the jaw harp, and the Celtic carnyx. The band uses reconstructions of actual archaeological finds of ancient instruments.
Members
The lineup of the group has changed over time. The musical works were created through the collective efforts of YARuGA, whose lineup at different periods included many people who made enormous creative contributions.
